Paper: Strathmore Bristol

Jack Nicholson

The is YOUNG Jack Nicholson. The photo I used was one that had the out of focus back-ground. I started thinking I would try to duplicate that effect, but later decided to keep everything in focus. I also added some of my own shading that wasn't there, because the photo seemed a little "whitewashed". My favorite Jack Nicholson movie is "As Good as it Gets"

I loved this guy in the "Airplane" movies and then all the "Naked Gun" movies.
I drew this in 6 hours on Strathmore Bristol board paper.

I started Matt Damon, and ended up drawing a gun scope, lol. I wanted to do something different from the straight on portraits I'm used to doing? Here are 4 stages I took along the way...

Ted's Twins

I just completed another job for a friend who just had twin boys! He is surprising his wife for mother's day! I thought it would be easy to draw babies with their eyes closed, no teeth, not hair, etc. It was a bigger challenge than I thought to due to all the subtleties. Here is the result (click to ENLARGE)

Hrebic Drawing

I did this for a friend. It's his wife Christina and their first child, a 4 week old boy (Charlie Jr). They tried for a long time to have a baby, but had many disappointments. I'm SO happy for them! They are such neat, giving and loving people!!!

He (Charlie Hrebic) is surprising his wife for mothers day with this 8x10 drawing of a photo they just had taken. He's going to have to matted and framed, of course. I could tell he REALLY liked it. I gave him a discount, because I owed him dinner out for working with me to buy his home. He also sent me a friend who bought 2 months later! Since I'm new to people wanting to pay me to draw, I found a whole new rewarding side, not to mention the look on his face when I gave it to him!

Chevy Chase

Subject: Chevy Chase (young)
Paper: Strathmore - Bristol Board - Premium Fine Tooth Surface
Medium: Staedtler Graphite Pencils
Size: 7.5 x 6.5
Completed: 5/3/09

I tried using Strathmore Bristol paper for this. I REALLY love how it reacts to graphite, but will take a little getting used to, as the B pencils seem lighter than normal, and you REALLY have to blend like crazy to penetrate the tooth of the paper!!!

I first saw Chevy Chase on "Saturday Night Live" and then in the movie "Caddyshack". So now it only seems right that I draw "Carl Spackler" the former Greens keeper about to become a champion - Bill Murray.

Ted Knight

Paper: Canson- Fine Tooth Surface - 70lbs weight
Medium: Staedtler Graphite Pencils
Size: 8x7

Completed: 5/1/09

Hours to complete: 7

I remember when the movie "
Caddyshack" came out in 1980. Who doesn't know THAT movie? We had just gotten our 1st VCR, and the concept of watching movies over and over again, and anytime you wanted, was brand new. We must have watched that movie 50 times and it never got old. Leading comedians Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight and Chevy Chase made it a culture classic! Ted died August 26th 1986, but will always be loved and remembered!

In this drawing, Ted plays "Judge Smails" who is approaching the greens keeper about a gopher he had just seen.
What made Ted so funny to me were his voice, facial expressions, laugh, and of course his lines. There are so many, but here are my favorite lines from Ted:

"Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I NEVER slice!"
(slices into the woods)
"BUY BUSHWOOD!??! You'll never be a member here!"
"Now...what the devil?"
(as Rodney Dangerfield jams to Journey on the course)
"Now...if I can just...sink THIS one? hehehe"
"Time for the old Billy Baroo! Billy, Billy, Billy....don't let me down Billy"

I first realized Paul's comedic acting abilities when my kids rented the movie "Big Fat Liar" in 2002. I watched it with them, and Paul's character "Marty Wolf" was laugh out LOUD funny!!! Especially when they spiked his pool with blue dye and shampoo with red dye.

Wentworth Miller's EYE

This is Wentworth Miller's eye. I was teaching my daughter how to draw in February of 2009, and I thought I should start by teaching her how to draw eyes, as they are so important! Because in my opinion, if you don't get the eyes right, the rest is downhill? I did this BEFORE I did the full drawing of Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller together. I used a nail to scratch his blonde eyelashes before I darkened around it. Total size of this is about 2x4". This is about the Actual Size?

Dennis Miller

Dennis Miller was originally a comedian, and later did the movie "Bordello of Blood" in 1996. He is known for his quick wit, and way with words.
Example quote: "A recent police study found that you're much more likely to get shot by a fat cop if you run"

This isn't the complete poster, and I added a guard tower & wall. This is ONLY 8.5 x 10.5 so the guys in the back-ground have heads the size of a coin, and I had to use a magnifying glass!

(I used a finishing nail duck tapped to an old pencil to get the negative effect in his hair, then filled in with 2B, B & F...then swiped it with a kneaded eraser. I read about how to do that in an EXCELLENT Book I HIGHLY recommend called "Drawing from LINE to LIFE" by Mike Sibley. www.sibleyfineart.com WORTH every penny! He's an artist from England?

Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector

Drawn 1/28/09
Posted 1/29/09
His eyes took me a long time, due to all the character lines! In the photo, he appeared to be looking just above the camera, and not directly at you, which is the effect I tried to reproduce. I found the pic on the web. I think it is from his Hannibal Lector character? I was torn between doing this one, and the famous shot of him with his mask. I chose this because it was more revealing.
